There are two major settings where youth experience peer pressure. One setting is in their home lives and the other in a school setting.
Characteristics
- Lack of self-esteem
- Allows others to make choices
- Early drug use, smoking, sexual behaviors and alcohol use
- Lack of interest in school work/grades
- Imitate friends
- Major change in attitude, depression
What is normal?
In some cases peer pressure can be viewed as positive. When blended with a good peer group they can help shape a healthy personality. A good peer group inspires one another to bring about constructive changes for betterment. A negative peer group can compel others to something they hate or do not enjoy. It is a human tendency to do what the crowd does. Few have the courage to resist peer pressure and be their own selves than mimicking others.
